Athlete Highlight - Melissa Murdock

Name: Melissa Murdock

Melissa Murdock

Hometown: Originally from Florida, but now Evington, VA

Age: 35 years old

When did you first start training at CrossFit Lynchburg?

I first started training CrossFit in September 2013, so just a little over a year

Tell us about your sports & fitness background:

I have played sports my entire life consisting of basketball, volleyball and softball. I decided to focus on basketball and played as a college athlete as a point guard. I have been around exercise mostly my entire life. After college, my exercise was mainly a cardio, usually running, and then some strength training.

How did you first get exposed to CrossFit?

I just heard people talking about CrossFit and I wanted to give it a try. I was bored with always doing the same type of exercise program and wanted something different and now I am hooked!!

What was your first workout and how did it go ?

I don't remember entirely what my first workout was, but I do remember it consisted of pull ups and I was so amazed at everyone in the class being able to do pullups without any assistance and how many they were doing!!

Favorite Workout/Least Favorite Workout:

My favorite workouts are actually those that have handstand push ups in them. I really love working on them and trying to improve them. My least favorite workout would have to be anything that involves the snatch. That move is still so difficult for me. I know that move has a lot of technique to it and I get so frustrated with it sometimes, but I will keep trying to hopefully get my weight higher on it.

What sort of changes have you seen in your body, health and fitness since starting CrossFit?

I feel like I am in one of the best shapes I have ever been in, in my life. I know I have definitely gotten stronger than I have ever been and I hope to continue getting stronger and stronger.

What sort of unexpected changes in your life have you experienced out of taking on something like CrossFit?

I think the challenges of the workouts everyday and the drive to push harder and get better and stronger is something that I was definitely not expecting. Being able to measure my progress over time and make sure that I am improving is also something that I love. I wasn't expecting to be able to look back over my previous workouts or my previous weights and be able to make sure that I was improving each week. I think that is awesome to have something that helps hold you accountable.

Please share any of your favorite CrossFit/CrossFit Lynchburg moments:

Being apart of the CrossFit Lynchburg community has been a wonderful experience. I so enjoy coming in and working out with everyone. It always amazes me how so helpful and encouraging everyone is. Everyone is always so eager to jump right in and help you improve! The coaches have been so great too. They always take the time to show you things you are doing wrong and to show you the correct way to fix it!

Any advice for people just getting started or new to CrossFit?Anyone that is just getting started, my advice is to stick with it! You will be amazed at the things you will be able to do in no time!!
